Joe "The Elegance" Beevers

Joe Beevers, originally uploaded by pokerwire.

Joseph Charles "The Elegance" Beevers is an English professional poker player and a member of The Hendon Mob. Joe Beevers was born 9 December 1967 in Marylebone, London)

Joe Beevers nickname "The Elegance" originates from the lifestyle he has been able to live through his poker winnings. Joe Beevers drives a Porsche 911 with the personalised number-plate Joe 911. In fact, Beevers is the only member of The Hendon Mob who kept his original nickname given by Victoria Coren in the first article on them, in the Evening Standard in September 2000. Joe Beevers is a season ticket holder at West Ham United F.C.

Joe Beevers lives in Hendon with his wife Claire, whom he married at the Bellagio in Las Vegas, Nevada at the conclusion of the 2005 WSOP. Joe Beevers has twin daughters, born February 21, 2006 named Millie and Lola.

During his lengthy poker career, Beevers became one of the pioneers of poker on television by appearing in every series of Late Night Poker, where he made a record 3 grand finals.Joe Beevers also won the 2007 Poker Million and finished runner-up in two further televised poker events.

Beevers' father taught him how to count cards in blackjack from age 10. His father also taught Joe Beevers how to work out permutations and probabilities on a Sinclair ZX81 computer. Beevers left school at age 16, and became a part of a card-counting team with his father and two others at age 18. They often played at the Sergeant Yorkes Casino in Luton, where they found a croupier who often paid out 3-1 on blackjacks, and sometimes also paid out when a player's hand was bust. The team eventually stopped playing as their success led to Beevers being banned from 4 London casinos, and his father being banned from 19. Between them they were banned from 21 out of 23 London casinos. They also went to gamble on horse racing events about three times a week.

Joe Beevers worked first for NatWest then for Citibank in Hammersmith. Joe Beevers went on to attend Middlesex University as a mature student towards of the end of his 4 years playing regular blackjack, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Honour's degree in Finance and Accounting at the age of 24.

Around this time, Beevers placed dog racing bets for future Hendon Mobster Ram Vaswani in Harrow, and they later met in Luton, starting an ongoing friendship.

Joe Beevers began playing poker by entering a $10 pot limit stud rebuy poker tournament during a blackjack session in Luton. He went on to regularly play in a seven-card stud game in North London, where he estimates he won $35,000 to start his bankroll. By the time he finished university, he was earning well enough from playing poker and giving lessons to teachers and other students that he never returned to office work.

Prior to the emergance of televised poker, Beevers ran private poker games with Ram Vaswani. They played much pot limit Omaha there, which Beevers considers to be his preferred poker variant. It was in this game that they met Barny and Ross Boatman, the other two members of the Hendon Mob. Beevers began to travel to tournaments and won his first major event in Amsterdam in 1997. Upon winning, Beevers called his flatmate at 3am and sang Queen's "We Are the Champions" down the phone to him.

Beevers and the rest of The Hendon Mob were invited by Nic Szeremeta to appear in the brand new Late Night Poker television series, and supported the then-questionable idea of using a hole cam to make poker into a spectator sport. Beevers appeared in all 6 series of the show, and is tied with Dave Colclough for a record 10 appearances. Beevers made the Grand Final in seasons 1,4 and 5.

Beevers was the first member of The Hendon Mob to cash in a World Series of Poker (WSOP) event, placing 14th in the $2,500 pot limit Texas hold 'em event in the 1996 World Series of Poker.

Joe Beevers also finished as the runner-up both to Jimmy White in the 2003 Poker Million and to Xuyen Pham in The Gaming Club World Poker Championship. It all started with a friendly visit back in June of 2003. Amanda stopped by to visit a friend, a friend who happened to be watching the WPT. Within a few hours, he had taught her the basics of Hold ‘em and played a few hands with her. That was it – Mandy B had a new passion.

Amanda “Mandy B” Baker won Event #10, a No-Limit Hold’em tournament with a $1,000 buy-in. She played impressive poker, knocking out six out of her eight opponents at the final table alone. Amanda “Mandy B” Baker, who earned $88,368 to her tournament take for the win, loves tourneys because they’re ‘more fun’. However, like many other pros, she finds that cash games, especially in the $5 - $10 limit range, to be more profitable.

Before the win at the WSOPC, Amanda “Mandy B” Baker’s biggest cash was her 253rd finish at this summer’s WSOP Main Event. Amanda “Mandy B” Baker earned over $44,000 for that.

Amanda “Mandy B” Baker, an active environmentalist, proved that she is willing to put her money where her mouth is. She plans to donate 50% of her bank from the WSOPC to environmental groups.

Full Tilt Poker announced earlier this week that they’ve signed this up-and-comer to their growing roster of pros. She joins other newbies such as Julian Gardner, Jared “TheWacoKidd” Hamby, Nikolaus “kaibuxxe” Jedlicka, Jon “PearlJammer” Turner, Peter “Nordberg” Feldman and Peter Jepson.

Ilari "Ziigmund" Sahamies

Ilari "Ziigmund" Sahamies is from Finland. is one of the most aggressive pot-limit Omaha players around. Coming from Finland and learning poker together with another great player Patrik Antonius can help a lot. Ilari and Patrik met playing pool (Ilari is also a two time national champion in pool) and decided to start playing poker together.

Ilari "Ziigmund" Sahamies started to go regularly to Helsinkis Grand Casino to lose his money. Ilari "Ziigmund" Sahamies managed to get money for his new hobby by working at a gas-stations, construction-yards and even as an telephone-operator. First year didn’t go too well - but by the end of the second year he managed to book winnings for around $100,000.

Nowadays we can find "Ziigmund" playing at the highest level of competition. "Ziigmund" can be found regularly playing at the big pot-limit Omaha tables at Full Tilt Poker where the blinds are $200/400. "Ziigmund" will never back down from a challenge - he will play (and has played numerous times) anyone especially heads-up. He has fought with the likes of Phil Ivey and David Benymine.

Ilari "Ziigmund" Sahamies is dominating the high stakes cash games on Full Tilt Poker as of late, and is currently the biggest winner for the month of September. The volatile Finnish player is up almost $1.9 million dollars for the month of September over a total of 13,869 hands (according to HighStakesDB.com).

With his recent performance, "Ziigmund" has dug himself out of a million dollar plus hole and is now up just over $600k on the year. "Ziigmund" typically makes most of his money from Pot Limit Omaha. September has been no different, as "Ziigmund" has made just over $900k from the high stakes PLO games that have been running on the site. Surprisingly though, Ilari "Ziigmund" Sahamies has done very well in the high stakes NLHE and Omaha Hi/Lo games, making an additional $900k+ in those two games.

Ilari "Ziigmund" Sahamies also visited The Big Game this summer - booking some nice winnings. He was playing (of course) drunk and fearlessly. Barry Greenstein complimented Ilari by telling that he thinks Ilari is one of the best pot-limit Omaha players in the world. Many call him also “The Omaha Kid”.

Ilari "Ziigmund" Sahamies is also quite a characted at the online-tables. He can mock people and tell it straight to their faces - for example calling Gus Hansen “the biggest fish online” or David Benyamine as a “a fat gay guy”.

Ilari "Ziigmund" Sahamies is also know for favouring coinflips - he tries to get people to do coinflips for huge amounts. Largest were against Phil Ivey when they agreed to do first a series of coinflips for $40,000 each and in the end they went for $80,000 flip.

Quote from Ziigmund: “Playing it safe will never get you to the top. More important is that you have the balls to bet at the right time. If you want to succeed you need to have a gamblers attitude”
